Trump reassures NRA rally he will ‘always protect your Second Amendment’

President Trump told an adoring crowd at the NRA’s annual convention in Dallas on Friday that he would always protect the Second Amendment.

“You have an administration fighting to protect your Second Amendment and we will protect your Second Amendment. Your Second Amendment rights are under siege, but they will never, ever be under siege as long as I’m your president,” Trump told the 80,000-strong crowd, who cheered, clapped and shouted, “We love you.”

“This is a record crowd. We like records,” the president added.

Pro-gun demonstrators and gun control advocates, many of them galvanized by the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, staged events outside the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.

Trump after the shooting briefly talked about expanding background checks and raising the age limit for people before they could buy assault-style rifles — but quickly abandoned that stance.

He also touted the economy and slammed “the phony Russia witch hunt” and the media, prompting a loud chorus of boos from the crowd.

And he touted the federal judge in Virginia who was critical of special counsel Robert Mueller’s prosecution of his former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, saying that prosecutors were going after Manafort to get at Trump.
